Redemptorist, Baclaran, Philippines

About Us - Vendors

When the Redemptorist came to Baclaran in 1932, Baclaran was just an obscure small sub-urban fishing village of Manila.  The small convento and church that the Redemptorist fathers built was in the middle of grassland near the seacoast where the fishermen used to anchor their small fishing boats.

When the novena started, people started to come in droves not just from the small village but also from the different provinces around Manila and from as many provinces around the country.  The arrival of thousands of devotees and pilgrims in Baclaran made this small village into a boom town and brought with it livelihood opportunities especially the poor.  Throughout the years, the shrine provided thousands of people with a living mainly through selling all sorts of things like food, clothes and many other things.  It also provided jobs in the business establishments around the shrine like restaurants, flea market and shops which mushroomed

after the explosion of the novena.  Indeed, many of the devotees who flocked to the shrine after praying the novena go shopping in the cheap shops and flea markets around the shrine.

However, the shrine first and foremost is for the spiritual needs of the devotees even as it  provides thousand of livelihood opportunities for the poor.   There have been complaints in the past that vendors have obstructed the smooth entry of the devotees into the shrine.  The shrine indeed serve both the concerns of the devotees and the vendors without trampling upon the rights and dignity of one over the other.
